MTO's Guide to Upgrading Your Bathroom Tile

Upgrading your bathroom – The right materials make a difference

Your bathroom is one of the few areas in your home that can really stand out. It is common for this area to break away with the central theme throughout the rest of the house. Bathrooms are where you can be the most creative. Whether it is installing a nice hexagon or basket weave pattern on the floor, the options are endless.  It is easy to get excited and install whichever tile catches your eye, but it is crucial to understand how your tile may interact with the constant presence of water and quick changes in temperature.

The daily presence of water in your bathroom during use puts emphasis on being conscious of the materials you use to build it. Not all materials are created equal.

What works best

Any product used to outfit your bathroom should have 2 main features or specifications depending on where you install them. Anything being installed on the floor should be non-slippery, or in technical terms have a high coefficient of friction, especially when wet. Of course, any tile you choose should also be water resistant – so make sure you’re using products that are advertised as sealed, or have a low water absorption rate. Also avoid using any metals that are likely to rust or corrode when in contact with water or humid environments.

Glass will most likely be your best friend for walls as it comes in just about any color, style, or pattern you can imagine. Its reflective surface also gives it a natural luminous shine that helps brightens up your bathroom without the use of harsh lights. It should also be mentioned that above all else, glass is very easy to clean and is resistant to stains of any sort.

Glazed Ceramics & Porcelain, of course, are perfect as well. Due to its weight, however, porcelain is usually better suited for floors. Natural stone is also a common trend for rustic or contemporary homes. Due to its naturally porous nature, you will have to make sure the type of stone your planning to use is recommended for that application and that you seal both the product and the grout.

Using metal in your bathroom is possible. Stainless Steel is your best option as it is highly resistant to oxidization as long as it isn't mixed with other alloys of some sort. Be sure to refer to the manufactures recommendations to avoid any mix-ups.
