How to Choose Different Kitchen Backsplash Options
When starting any project, it can be easy to feel suddenly overwhelmed or like your just in way over your head. We understand, adding tile to your home at first seems like just placing a tile and grouting. But then you realize you’ve got a million different options to choose from, with another million varieties than each have their own specific applications. Then - the same exact thing applies to the materials you’ll be using to install, and so on, and so on.
But don’t worry! It’s all about time and planning. Step one is always defining the scope of your project. The scope of our project today is kitchen backsplashes. This eliminates a lot of options or questions that might come up otherwise. We’re not installing outside, not in a pool, not on the floor, not an entire wall. Just the kitchen backsplash which is the open space of your kitchen walls between your counters, cabinets, and appliances. Typically this space is 2-3 feet high, above your kitchen counter, sink, and stove, and width can vary depending on your style of kitchen.
The important detail is that this is a very specific and well-defined space of your home. This gives you some wiggle room to have some fun and do something a little different. Something that stands out. Even something bold. Why? Because its a smaller than average space and not an entire wall which might be a little busy with certain design options. So we’ve got options?
Let’s get the basics out of the way. Most kitchens settle with a neutral or complementary color mosaic tile, usually made up of 1x1 chips or a linear pattern of sorts. This would be the most common approach giving you the largest variety of options to choose from - but let's be honest that variety isn’t necessarily in style but in color. The majority of options in this category are typically glass tiles and honest great options for your kitchen due to how simple maintenance can be. Just wipe and clean - say goodbye to all the oils and grime that build up from day to day cooking and hello to tile that will look about as new as the day you installed it.
Another Brick in the Wall
Subway tiles can help add a little more variety and style to your backsplash. This larger format tile can sometimes make more of an immediate impact on your backsplash - especially if you choose a tile with natural variance. Some porcelain or natural stone subway tiles can vary from piece to piece with different shades, natural characteristics of the material they are made from, and even completely unique surface textures where no two tiles could ever be identical.
Subway tiles also allow for decorative styles where each piece has a special color, pattern, texture, and finish while still exhibiting the more refined and elegant characteristics of manufactured or made to order materials.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of subway tiles is the opportunity to break away from styles or patterns ingrained into us with the passing of time. Typically everyone installs their tile the same way. From left to right. At most the only change people make is staggering the rows of tile to help offset any visible patterns or unwanted checkerboarding in mosaics that have strong elements or patterns that lack variance. Subway tiles allow us to go vertical or diagonal - greatly increasing options to style your kitchen depending on your personal taste or what might work best.
Break the Mold
This might come as a surprise to some of you. But we’ll let you in on a little secret. Tiles don’t have to be square or rectangular. Crazy right? We know. Hexagons, arabesque, scallop/shell, wave, fan, rhombus, and even triangular patterns have taken the industry over by storm. These new shapes and styles have truly allowed us all to have unquestionably unique installations where almost no two are ever the same.
Adding Another Dimension
It’s not 1994 anymore, left, right, up, and down aren’t the only directions we can move in. A growing trend in recent times is 3D tiles. These tiles literally add depth to your backsplash with their three-dimensional surfaces and unique geometric patterns allowing us to break away from the curse of uninteresting walls covered in flat square or rectangular tiles.
It really comes down to your own personal choice and style. But the important thing is - in this day an age almost anything is possible. We are no longer tied down to just plain, simple, square tile backsplashes. (There's nothing wrong with that.) Just know - that there are so many more options available. Why let your backsplash look like everyone else’s?
