2020 Bathroom Tile Trends - Mosaic Tiles and More
As much as we’d like to continue to say that picking out tiles for your next bathroom remodel or project is easy, the fact of the matter is that it is not. Not anymore at least. These days there are just so many options. So many shapes, so many colors, so many materials, so many finishes, and so many textures. Honestly. Where do you even begin? Once upon a time ago, bathroom tile was all about being functional. Low maintenance, durability, and things like water resistance were priority decision factors when choosing the tile for you. Nowadays, the aesthetic factor tends to have the final say in most conversations, assuming all the other boxes are checked off.
Looking Beyond Function
There was once a time where function over form meant accepting that some aesthetics just weren’t viable options due to characteristics that went against the main function or goal. For example, glass tiles were terrible options for bath or shower floors since they provided no grip and were essentially a bad accident waiting to happen once they got wet. Due to new advances on manufacturing, and an overall influx of creative design trends - that’s no longer an issue. We have texture glass surfaces and things like matte finishes which allow glass tiles to now be a feasible option in areas where it was previously ill-advised due to slip concerns. It’s no longer a choice of function over form or vice verse. Now you can have both.
Going Metal?
Metal is a material with a lot of history in interior design - it’s found its place into just about every nook and cranny of our spaces. More recently into kitchens and bathrooms. Yes, bathrooms. Of course, not all metals are created equal and one should always confirm with the manufacturer’s recommendations - if it is indeed possible to use in certain scenarios.
Just remember, this isn’t an all or nothing situation. Metallic accents have been a growing trend and the perfect way to give the main backsplash behind your sink and mirror a little personality. Stone or glass mosaics with metallic accents are a beautiful new trend allowing us to experience the best of both worlds in a place we previously would never have considered doing so. We wouldn’t recommend doing so on your floors however due to wear and tear showing much more prominently on metallic items which would also require a higher level of maintenance.
Matte - All The Things
Yes, in 2020 all the things should be matte. This finish doesn’t just look beautiful on black. It’s perfect for everything. With matte finishes, dirt and dust are much less visible, and most matte materials are not easily permeable either. Matte finishes provide a sense of subtle luxury and elegance without the need to be flashy or bright as glossy finishes tend to be in comparison.
The added benefit being you can never have too many matte finishes. They aren’t overwhelming like have a bright room full of reflective gloss tiles can be. Just imagine admiring your beautiful matte walls and floors and not having to deal with wiping away smudges or streaks every 5 minutes.
Graphic Tiles
There’s only so many all white, all black, or monochromatic bathrooms you can walk into before you really start wondering if they are all the same. Patterns have been exploding in popularity recently and coming in all shapes and sizes - from ceramic to subway tiles - these can be used safely and liberally just about anywhere in your bathrooms. Main walls, floors, shower areas, you name it. If you really want to get creative you can even add onto your ceilings as the small lightweight tiles that make up these beautiful patterns can be installed just about anywhere.
