2019 Kitchen Backsplash Trends - Part 1
Any new kitchen remodel will put a good amount of emphasis on the backsplash. Let's face it, it’s the centerpiece. The backsplash is where most of your attention will be focused while in use, not to mention the backsplash is what protects your wall from the normal wear and tear of constant cooking oils and foods, cleaning and washing, etc. It’s also an easy place to further complement your countertop of choice of color coordinating cabinets.
These days we have the luxury of choice. Material choice is the last things limiting our vision of a finish remodeled kitchen. Metals, ceramics, porcelain, glass, stone, of every shape, size, color, and shade in between.
With so many choices - where do we begin?
Thankfully as time goes on popular tried and true methods begin taking the limelight.
Ceiling-High Backsplash
Our concept of a backsplash has been nearsighted for far too long. Most people hear backsplash and only consider the space between the countertop and the wall cabinetry. But what about the rest of the wall? Your kitchen is more than the 3 feet between your appliances and furnishings. Why not tile all the way up? Straight to the ceiling, take advantage of all the empty space next to, between, above, and below cabinets, appliances, moldings, and windows. Your kitchen is an entire space, a whole experience, not just a small forgettable section.
Large Subway Tiles
Subway tiles have long been a go-to option for clean, minimalistic, or modern kitchens. Larger subway tiles can give smaller kitchens the perception of being larger and having more space. Not to mention, there's a lot less to clean when it comes to the grout lines in between chips. Their uniform shape and colors also help provide a sense of continuity without overwhelming the senses with extravagant patterns or a distracting mesh of colors.
Metallic and Mirrored Finishes
These are definitely a new up and comer compared to our other suggestions. More and more people are looking to add a little bit extra to their otherwise subtle backsplashes or wet bars. Depending on the style or layout of your home this could be an ideal scenario. During the day a lot of natural light will help brighten up your kitchen with the addition of the reflected light. At night, with proper placement of light fixtures, a dramatic glassy effect can be created.
Patterns, Patterns, and Patterns
With the growing trend of more and more neutral countertops and cabinetry, simple, plain backsplashes just don’t seem to be cutting it anymore. There needs to be something more to break up the monotony and really grasp the attention and admiration of those in the room. Large oversized tiles with graphic prints or bold patterns are growing in popularity for this very reason. Spanish tile specifically has become its own category, ripe with custom handpainted options as well as high-end pieces in varying textures, shapes and finishes.
Making Your Mark
Have you considered any of these options before? As general as some of the categories might seem, there are literally hundreds of different materials, styles, and colors to choose from. Some of them taking cues from multiple influences making it possible to mix and match as you please! Creating patterns with large subway tiles with mirror pieces mixed in? Maybe? It’s really up to you!
